Hot end to the year

It's the last day of the year and I've spent it at home trying to keep cool. What a way to end the year with temperature rising up to 42C and more hot days to follow.

Even though I've lived in Australia for so many years I still cannot understand how these kweilo think. With such a hot day I'm hiding inside my house trying to keep cool but my neighbours spent all day in the backyard, BBQ summore in the 42C heat!

Not only that they let their little kids play in the heat as well. *Roll eyes* Sometimes I can't help but wonder if they have half a brain. I can't stand the heat but they can't get enough of it.

Never mind lah...if they're happy to get themselves burnt to a crisp then it's their prerogative. I'm just a cina ahpek so what do I know about the danger of sun and skin cancer and all that. Happy New Year everybody!

The best Christmas ever!

Our friends and us have a years old tradition of spending Christmas together every year and we'd have a little Kris Kringle where we would get a present for someone in our group so everyone will get a little something from Santa that year.

But somehow when the email of who's supposed to get presents for who was sent out someone misread the email and stuff up the Kris Kringle this year with one person getting two presents and me getting none! :(

So faced with this awkward situation the honorable thing to do would be to laugh off the little mishap and get on with life since life is full of mishaps. But being the kiasu and thick face me that I am I didn't want to do that but instead made the others felt guilty that they didn't get me a present this year. Hehehehehe...I'm evil lidat!

So being guilt ridden they pooled their money together and got me a scale model kit! They got me a Revell Star Wars Republic Star Destroyer which is what I was thinking of getting next after I'm done with the project I'm working on now. Ahhh...this is the best Christmas ever!

Another bites the dust

Not a good way to end the year; woke up this morning to find one of my remaining fish dead in the fish tank. Its been behaving funny for the last couple of days...

...but it decided to kick the bucket today. There has been many close calls for this little one but it always surprised me when it just came good again but not today.

Now I've only got one last fish in the tank and its blind. It used to be red before it lost its colour and turned white. I've put it in a fish bowl so I can clean out the fish tank. I'm thinking of getting new fish...

The most beautiful gumtree I've ever seen

I saw the most beautiful gumtree I've ever seen before. It was just starting to bloom and there were bees buzzing around the flowers collecting nectar and when I got closer to take photos two Rosella birds flew away from the tree.
I used to think gumtrees and native Australian plants are boring but I'm beginning to think different now. Australian native plants have some unique flowers found no where in the world.

Look at the brilliant red colour of the flowers. If you look carefully you might just see the bees buzzing about. I would plant this in my garden but they'll grow to big trees which is not a good idea for my little garden.

Chocolate cupcakes

Terese made these delicious chocolate cupcakes this Christmas with flakes on top...yum... There was a full box of them but then I got hungry and Terese was still napping upstairs...

So I though I'll just have one cupcake...afterward I wanted another...and another...and another until there was only two left! Never leave delicious looking cupcakes around the place!

Thank you Santa!

I've been a good boy this year and Santa knows it. That's why Santa's been good to me this year too; got a parcel all the way from the North Pole addressed to me.

It's from Santa and I'm so excited to know what it is. Is it a box of chocolate? Or a book? A Star Wars figurine perhaps? Or it could be what I've always wanted for the last few months?

Yes it is! It's exactly what I want for Christmas this year and Santa granted me my wish; its the newly released Fine Molds 1/48 scale Star Wars X-Wing Fighter model kit set.

This kit comes with 130 parts but doesn't require cement, everything just snap into places but needs painting. I am so going to enjoy putting this one together. Thank you Santa!

Santa didn't forget me this year

I ordered myself a Christmas present from Japan last week. It's the Fine Molds 1/48 X-Wing Fighter scale model kit but I did not expect to get it by Christmas...

But when I went to track the item online (its sent by EMS) it showed that the item has already arrived in Melbourne last night. So I thought what's the chances that I will get it today? I went to look in my mailbox and surprise surprise there was a card left by the courier telling me he missed me this morning and that I can pick up the item from my local post office!

You should have seen my jumping up and down. Terese said it would've been a good picture to take of me in my ecstatic mood and why wouldn't I? Santa didn't forget me this year; he made sure my present arrives before Christmas. Have a Merry Christmas everybody!

Serenity Now!

I'm on holiday but I've just finished my scale model project so I've run out of things to do! Luckily I remember I still got the whole season of FireFly on my hard drive so I decided to start watching them this afternoon.

And you know what? I like it! It's a sci-fi/western kinda series with quirky scenes and a ship called Serenity but I'm liking it a lot. Just finished 4 hours of it and now I'm waiting for the second disc to finish burning so I can continue. Haven't seen shows this good for a long time now...

Kiamsiap no more?

Today being the last day at work my Kiamsiap Boss gave me a gift card worth $100 as a Christmas present. This is the first time ever he's given me a Christmas present.

Now I'm worried, what is his hidden agenda? Why so nice this year whereas previous years so kiamsiap? Keep it up and he'll lose his reputation as Mr. Kiamsiap Boss but let's see how long this will last hor.

Bottle of Red

At Terese's work one of her clients sent her a Christmas present today; its a bottle of red wine. In fact its a 2005 Paul Osicka Shiraz. Never heard of it before!

But upon googling we found out that its a limited edition wine that you can store up to 10 years so we might keep it till 2017 before drinking it ya? Tomorrow is my last day at work before my 2 weeks Christmas break so whoopie doo!

I've paid for it

It's finally out! I've been waiting for this particular scale model kit for ages but now the manufacturer Fine Molds has finally released it and I've paid for it. Now all I gotta do is wait for it to arrive from Japan via EMS which is pretty fast but I doubt I'll get it before Christmas. Never mind, it'll be my post Christmas present!

This is different from my previous X-Wing model in that its scale is 1/48 while the previous one was 1/72 so its bigger. Also this new and improved kit requires no cement and all parts just snap on together and has even more details than before so I think I will enjoy working on this one. By the way I'm still working on Slave 1 which is almost finish.

A way around it

Quick update on my sick desktop computer at home; the problem definitely lies in the motherboard. *Pin medal on Dabido* But I've found a way around the little problem without having to get a new motherboard or a new computer.

I noticed it stops at the stage where the BIOS was seeking the floppy disk so I went into the BIOS and disable the Boot Up Floppy Seek. This way it doesn't have to seek floppy every time it POSTs and I can boot right into Windows.

There's definitely a fault with the motherboard but I will keep using this PC until it dies on me in the future whenever that may be. I still have my new notebook to use should this PC dies but before that happens I'm not going to spend more money on another computer.

Christmas lights

We went back to the house we visited last year for their beautiful Christmas lights and decorations and it seems like it's even bigger and better than last year.

Though I didn't bring my camera this evening the decorations are pretty much similar to last year's thus I'm recycling last year's photo. It's wonderful how some people would go through all the trouble to light up their houses so the kids can come and be amazed by it including me.

Last couple of years I used to go hunting for Christmas lights to see but not this year, they're pretty much the same as previous years not that they don't look nice. Don't get me wrong I do love them but running all over town to see them again this year I don't think so.

Sick PC

This weekend I found out that my desktop computer is having some problem. Seems like when I boot it up the first time it won't go past memory check; some thing to do with the BIOS.

But then if I go into the BIOS again it will boot again. So this happens all the time now, I thought may be the CMOS battery is dying but if that happens usually the time will be wrong but that is not the case so I don't know what the problem might be. It is an old PC so maybe it's time I get a new one!

$210 wor!

Finally I got my new denture today. All up I had to see the dental technician four times before I finally got my new denture. First time I went he used some kind of gadget to get me to bite on I think to measure my teeth.

Second time I went he made a mold of my upper and lower jaws so he could make a replica of my teeth. Third time I went he had me tried out some fitting to see how the denture will fit and today he finally finished it. So much work! I remember in Malaysia only had to go twice; first time to get mold done and second time to collect denture. No wonder it cost me so much; $210 wor!

They've come back with a vengeance

I'm glad I didn't throw those cumquat trees out when they weren't doing well. Instead I pruned them back real hard including the root balls leaving them to fend for themselves in small pots.

See how 'hard' I pruned them? They were over a meter tall and the root balls were four times the size I cut them into. Then I just stuck them in two small pots and left them be.

But look at them now! They've come back with a vengeance and thriving, lots of healthy green growth but no flowers yet. Soon I think, now I really can't get rid of them. Gotta find a more permanent home for them, you want one?

Home made pizza

Instead of ordering pizzas down at the local pizza restaurants Terese makes a kick ass home pizza using simple ingredients. So simple anyone can do it even me !

Using a pita bread Terese used her no meat pasta sauce as base on it before adding her own ingredients like coriander pesto, ham, pineapples and mozzarella cheese before sticking it into the oven till its golden brown. Before serving sprinkle some rocket leaves over the top and dig it!

Got your Christmas tree yet?

My neighbor bought her Christmas tree from this man on the weekend. He came with a trailer full of Christmas trees to deliver to his customers. This is the only time of the year when he'll be making a killing with the exorbitant prices of these Christmas trees.
I can't understand why so many people prefer a real tree to a plastic one. Plastic ones look just as real, well formed, no need to water and can be stored away for future years but real ones will die on you before you can even say Happy New Year. Plus they are messy and you have to feed them water everyday before they start to drop their leaves on your floor and die!

A good possum is a dead one

I've always said that a good possum is a dead one and that's how I like them! Most of you have known me to have a personal vendetta against these night crawlers that always come into my garden and ravage my rose bushes.

So when I saw one dead on the side of the road I couldn't be happier, that's one less possum we have to deal it. Don't get me wrong, I didn't kill it. It probably got ran over by a car though I can't see it getting flattened. Why the government has to protect these pesky creatures is beyond my understanding, they're not endangered yet we can't harm them in any way and have to put up with their nuisance. *roll eyes*

Bigger & Better

We went to Doncaster yesterday and drove past Westfield shopping center when Terese took this shot while I was driving. It's a major renovation on the part of Westfield to improve their shopping center to keep up with the demand of the consumers.

Before the renovation started this was one of the smaller shopping centers in Melbourne and like everything else if you want to survive you have to expand and improve to attract shoppers back to your shopping centers. The renovation's been going on for a while now but it's scheduled to open next year so I'll be expecting a bigger and better Westfield next year.

Growing pineapple

I've read somewhere that you can grow a pineapple plant from the crown of a pineapple fruit so I'm going to give it a go. We bought a pineapple from the fruit shop yesterday and when cutting it we cut the crown off and I planted in a small container.

But then I think I may have done it the wrong way since reading more on how to plant them in a website that shows you have to root the crown first. I just stick the whole crown in a pot of planting mix. Oh well I can always try another one if this one doesn't grow.

Meeting my brother

I met my brother last night at the airport; he was on his way back to Singapore where he lives and was catching the midnight flight from Melbourne. He was in Sydney for the last few days for work and was supposed to catch the 5 pm flight back to Singapore but it was too early for him.

So he decided to fly to Melbourne before flying off from here. With the few hours he had at Melbourne airport he decided to catch up with me. He called and I went to the airport just after 8, we spent a couple of hours there chatting until 10 when I left. He was flying the new A380 business class which is quite an experience with large seating and can turn into a bed summore! And if you travel 1st class you get a room with double bed...I will never be able to fly in such luxury.

Motorola is not helpful

Dang! Motorola is not helpful with their products. This new phone I got for Terese can take pictures and videos but they don't tell you how to download them to your PC.

So I went googling and found that you have to buy the software for that. F**k that! I'm not paying any money so I went hunting for the driver myself and I found it, along with a software that will download the images and videos for me! Woohoo! To Motorola...*ngek ngek ngek*

I'm happy now

I just got a call from the air-con installer; he has spoken to Clive Peeters manager and they're going to work something out among themselves so I won't have to pay for that bracket that's required for the external unit. Good! I shouldn't have to pay for any more money than what deal was done between me and Clive Peeters that day so I'm happy now. Got me pissed off for an hour and a half just then.

But now the installer has started on another job in Port Melbourne and won't be back here till 11.00am so looks like I'll be home all day. I won't be able to go in to work, have to stay and watch them!

I'm cheesed off

I'm really cheesed off this morning, the air-con installers came this morning at 7.30am but they only found out that the air-con is to be installed upstairs so it needs a bracket for the external unit to hang on the wall. The salesman didn't tell them that and they didn't bring one along.

To top it off I will have to pay for the bracket which is going to cost me $130. I was so pissed off I don't want to pay any more money so they are going to talk to the salesman when he gets in at 9 before calling me again. I expect the worst and may have to shell out the $130 extra but I will be giving Clive Peeters a piece of my mind don't they worry about that!

Getting a credit card

Gone are the days when we used to get paid in cash and buy things in cash too. With the advent of online shopping on the internet and the cashless society it is a necessity for more and more people to use credit cards for everyday purchases.

Credit cards are good in general, I have 2 of them but what is important is to use the credit cards to work for you and not the other way around. There are so many lenders wanting your business you can afford to shop around for the best deal like low interest and other incentives. More and more lenders are willing to give you interest free balance transfers just to get you in and not to mention those interest free credit cards all begging you to jump onboard. So do shop around and go with the one that offers the best deal for you.

Gotta do what I gotta do

Took the morning off today to go see the denture technician near my place. Its a run down joint with an old guy who looks like he's been doing this all his life. Good also coz he has experience so must do good job.

He seems friendly enough; chat a lot, asking about everything I do and stuff. Well I only had to spend 20 minutes in there, he just need a mold done first before he'll make the denture. I'll have to come back on Monday for a fitting. $210 is what I can expect to pay he said! Oh well, I gotta do what I gotta do.
