Siao Ding Dang

I remember when I was growing up in Malaysia there was a comic which I enjoyed reading everytime a new issue hit the store. It was Siao Ding Dang!

There was Siao Ding Dang himself, Ta Siong and I can't remember the rest of the gang that includes Ta Siong's future wife and the 2 bullies, a fat one and a tiny one.

Originally the comic was written and animated in japanese for the japanese market but its popularity spread across most of Asia and most people get to read it in chinese so names had to be changed so the characters would have chinese names instead. Siao Ding Dang was supposed to be Doraemon in Japan.

If you're not familiar with Siao Ding Dang, he's actually a robot cat sent from the future to guide Ta Siong through his life so he doesn't end up in some horrible fate which I can't remember. You might wonder why Siao Ding Dang doesn't look like a cat especially since he doesn't have his cat's ears and that's because they got eaten by rats when he was sleeping one day! From then on he was scare of rats for the rest of his life!

One really cool thing about the robotic cat from the future is his pouch on the front of his torso. From this pouch he can take out any kinds of cool gadget you can possibly think of! Its like a bottomless pouch with unlimited supply of cool gadgets. Now how do so many things fit in his tiny pouch? Well its like a worm-hole to another dimension where things can come out of it as well as go back into it. High quantum physics stuff I won't even bother to find an explanation for!

Anyway I used to wait eagerly for the next issue of Siao Ding Dang to hit the store periodically and would spent days going through the whole book several times not just for the cool pictures but also because it was in chinese and my chinese was terrible I had trouble understanding some of the dialogues.

I love reading Siao Ding Dang and I used to wish that I had my own personal robotic cat from the future...

...so I improvise and make 3 of my own!

  1. I am going to report you to the SPCA, cruel to dye the cats blue! And I hate that stupid Doraemon. My kids read the Bahasa version and watch the series last time. The only reason I allowed them is because I want them to improve the BM. Otherwise, I hate doraemon, I hate doraemon, I hate doraemon.

The "future wife" is called Sizuka or something. The bullies are Giant and Shinyu :) My favourite episode is the one where Doraemon produces a kind of bread that when used to "copy the pages of a book and then eaten", Nobita will be able to remember the whole page.. Those were the days..
