I’m thinking of putting in a conservatory in the house so I can enjoy the garden with the glass walls and ceiling. I can also bring the garden into the house so I can enjoy it while I’m inside. I need to get an idea of how my conservatory will look like and a builder to put it in for me. I found Anglican Home Improvements that does all sort of home extensions and they have many type of conservatories available. I can rest assured that Anglican will do a great job for me because of their thirty six years experience in quality home improvements.Friday, September 21, 2007

Poor Little Pumpkin
Little Qian Xun or "Pumpkin" as was called by the people who found her was abandoned by her father possibly because she was going to slow him down as he tried to run away from New Zealand. This is indeed heart wrenching, how could a father dump his own 3 year old child in a strange city?Story is the father came over from New Zealand with his daughter but left for the USA after dumping his daughter. Police in New Zealand has found a body in the boot of a car belonging to the father who is believed to be the mother but is yet to be confirmed. I don't care too much about the other stuff but I'm just saddened by poor little "Pumpkin".

Potting Table
I wanted to get a potting table so I would not break my back when I'm working in the garden. I check out a few websites to see what's out there and there's hundreds of them mainly in the USA with prices in the hundreds! Here's a couple I saw on some websites, they look good but too fancy and pricey. I noticed most of them have one thing in common; they have a sunken container on one side for potting mix, by the looks of them they kinda look like the kitchen sink! Which leads me to an idea; I can build my own potting table using an old kitchen sink!
What luck I have, last week when Terese and I were going for a walk in the neighbourhood Terese saw someone threw out an old kitchen sink! So I took it home and clean it up a bit and it still looks pretty good.
So on the weekend, I went to the local hardware store and bought some cheap timber to erect a frame for the sink to sit on...
...and there you have it, my very own potting table made with an old kitchen sink and some timber frames! It even has castors so I can wheel it anywhere I like.

Second Chance Part 2
This is how the root ball looks like after years of growing in a limited confine of the container, massive root ball and I'm going reduce it in size dramatically with a normal saw.
First I'm going to cut the bottom half of the root ball off in half. It cuts quite easily coz its mainly fine roots with the occasional tapered roots near the middle.
Next I cut the root ball even smaller by cutting the sides down by more than half. After that use a secateur and tidy up the root ball so there's no rouge roots sticking out here and there.
And that's how they look like after my little 'surgery'. That's a massive amount of roots taken off so they can start growing new roots if they survive this. But if they do survive it would be a while before they start to look good.
Plant them in containers like any normal plants but keep them in a shady place. Keep the growing medium moist and cross my fingers! Let's check back with them in a couple of months or so.

Second Chance Part 1
Well I was actually thinking of throwing them out but now I've decided to give them a second chance. I'm going to do some drastic actions and see if they can bounce back to good health.
First of all I gave them a really heavy pruning, so heavy that they're only left with the main trunks standing! Next I will have to prune the roots as well but that will have to wait till next time coz I still haven't done it yet!...to be continued.
Organize my life
Planting Camellia
I chose a Camellia because they thrive in shady or part shady spots so in this case would be ideal. Camellias originated from China and did you know that tea leaves come from a Camellia plant?
First up I dig a hole just large and deep enough to accommodate the root ball of the plant. You don't need to dig too deep unless you're burying a body! After you've dug the hole throw in some fertilizer at the bottom of the hole.
Remove the plant from it's plastic container and tease the roots out a little to help it establish itself quicker. Before I place the plant in the hole I also stuck a stake into the hole which will act as a supporting beam for the plant later on in it's life when it has grown bigger.
Place the plant into the hole right next to the stake making sure it's level with to ground level. You don't want to plant it too deep. Then backfill with soil making sure there's no air pockets. Throw on some more fertilizer on the surface.
While you're backfilling, make a circular mount around the plant so that when you water later the water will form a pool in the circular mount and soak right into the ground to the roots.
That's another job done. While it's still establishing itself, make sure it doesn't dry up and water twice a week or maybe even more during the hotter months in summer. It should establish itself within a year and able to fend for itself. In the meantime, tie the branches to the stake if needed to help it along.
