Terese found some interesting things at the Salvation Army shop last week and I was surprised too when she showed them to me. We have drinks in cans, foods in cans and even air in a can so why not plant in a can?
Check out these little beauties. They're called BloomCan and they come with different plants and Terese got two containing common mint and basil herbs. They look cute don't they?
On one end of the can we have a big opening where you can simply open with your finger like those pringle chips container while at the other end there's a plastic cover. In it there's an instruction on how to grow these.
Its pretty straight forward really, you open the top end to find vermiculite as growing medium for the plant. There should have the plant seeds inside and the instruction said to give it 3/4 cup of water to soak up the vermiculite.
On the other side of the can there's a lift up handle like a soft drink can opener, carefully open that opening to let the excess water drain off.
When they water stopped draining, cover up the underside with the plastic cover so you can place the can anywhere you like in the house without worrying about messing up your furnitures.
I've placed them on the window sill so they get good sunlight to grow and just make sure they don't dry up. Give them a spoonful of water every day or two and watch them grow. They should start to germinate in a week or so. Be patient..

i am waiting...
how cool is that? :)
In cans? Not environment-friendly! Get the seeds and plant in pots or on the ground...the old-fashioned way! I'm sure yvy will support me on this one. BTW, where's she hah? Married already...so has her hands full??? Guess she won't care anymore how many bowls of sharks' fins soup we eat....
Wow that is cute!
Can't wait for it to start sprouting.
see fei: keep on waiting..
king's wife: very cool!
SA: what u need is the plastic kind!
STP: of course not envirinmentally friendly..thats just some arty farty stuff they created for yuppies! not that i am mind u! hehehe..
che-cheh: keep ur fingers crossed!
we also have that here. i've tried the carnation and the.....erm forgot what the other one was. but as typical of my very black moldy fingers, they have since gone to the garden up above. actually the carnation was pretty healthy (surprise, surprise). problem was the flowers never came. i got a little bored with just looking at leaves, so i chucked it.
That is so unique!! and the can is cool in a hippy way! me likey.. show us the plants when it blooms.
btw, unrelated to this post...do u know if a malaysian can open an australian bank account??

Cool, I currently have rosemary, basil, thyme, oregano and some stunted dills growing in my garden...am trying to find proper seeds for spearmint and peppermints here that will germinate.
So, keep us posted if these bloomcan sprouts or not.

good luck, basil will take 2 weeks to germinate. Will take another week to see the sprout. BTW, a pack of basil seed cost less than RM2. It is the ingredient for "frog egg" - Biji selasih.
