Beware: This is a long and boring post full of pictures of old building! If you don't appreciate old buildings then you can be forgiven for skipping this post altogether but if you like old buildings then knock yourself out!
Last Sunday was Open Day at the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton Gardens and everybody is free to check out this historical building that was built way back in 1880 during the gold rush.
The building was the first building in Australia to achieve World Heritage listing meaning its important to all peoples of the world. The building is still being used for different events throughout the year but most events have been moved to the new exhibition centre on the Yarra river.
There were a lot of guides dressed in 19th century clothings to show people around the building and to explain all the different areas of the building and its history. On a normal day a tour of the building would cost $5 but today it was free!
Check out the paintings on the walls and arches, imagine the time you have to put into all that details. And preserving the paintings! That's got to be expensive, no wonder we get taxed so heavily!
Even the roof of the dome is painted to great detail, much like the Sistene Chapel in the Vatican. Well maybe not that elaborate but still very intricately done. Am I boring you to death already or not?
I went up to the next level to get a different angle of shots and it does highlight the magnificent wooden floor. I wonder if that is the original timber floor because it would've been all worn out by now.
In 1901 the building hosted the opening of the first Federal Parliament. The Duke of Cornwall and York declared the opening in front of 12,000 dignitaries and guests. So you see Melbourne used to be the center of power once before before they had to go and build Canberra!
If you've come this far then you do enjoy old buildings so do you want to see more? Since this is vol. 1 so its a safe bet that there's going be more! Till next time, yippity yippida that's all folks!

Haiya...I thought "boring" was as in boring/making holes and "post" meant "tiang" or lamp post kind of post!!! So I was looking forward to reading about something like a "tiang" for making holes!!! Ha ha ha ha ha! BTW, I love old buildings...like me, big, strong and cosy!
No lah - not boring at all!
(Or maybe I like boring things? Hmmmm...)
Nice photos!
:)
can you take pics of the old old cathedral and let me see see?
If you want to see old buildings, the ones in england/ scotland lagi ancient. I love the stained glasses and the architecture of the cathedrals there.
Nice photos...!
Nice!
Not boring at all!

Beautiful!!! I want more!
I love the arches and the paintings.
Nice building and definitely should be on the Heritage List and preserved...like old people, should be put into institution and viewed from behind bars rather than running around and creating havoc..
Anyway..decided to comment in your blog again as I guess our great experiment work eh..hehehehe...
che-cheh: hmm..u like? ok, stay tuned!
QV: now now, be nice & play safe yah? i didn't know u like to experiment so much! very adventurous!hahahahaha
HAHAHAHAHAHA aiyo....now u know ah..well...at least we know what we suspected was correct :P
For those who is wondering what the "great experiment" was, Wuch and I decided to "get into an argument" and say bad things to each other a few weeks back to see who wld be kaypo and comment about it and who would come flying back here and comment again :P hehehehehe... well....it worked..as someone did come back and start to comment..
Okie Wuching...I will play nice and ignore certain people...for after all..we have proved our point...
Second part of the experiment is to inform u all, that you should not read whatever you see in the blog or comment box as truth of what is going on, as people can manipulate things to suit their convenience, as can be seen by Wuching and me, we created a "fight" but we didn't mean it and we had a good laugh chatting on MSN about it all the time and had a hard time trying to figure out what to scold each other...so...don't be fooled by what you read and know that blogging is just harmless fun and we don't really mean what we say when we type our comments here..so don't be a green face bird and run away and complain everytime if people step on your tail... hehehe...
Most importantly, treat this as fun, don't be offended if people say things against you on the comment box, have a good laugh about it and at the end of the day the one who complains the most and CBC the most is the one that's being laughed at...and most importantly..if you don't like people ketuking you..then stop ketuking others lah...cos if you deems fit to lash out at others, of course we will lash out at you, irregardless of age, sex or religion, because if you see fit to ketuk other people, then we assume that you can take people ketuking you and not become cbc instead...cos if you do...we all have a good laugh at your expense hehehehe
Okie..peace out...
QV: thank you father for the long sermon!
HAHAHAHAHAHA...Have to explain mah..or else people don't know what the great experiment was all about :P
I just wa...oops!!! Just when I thought...! (EXITS QUICKLY!!!)
P.S.: Sorry, I will not be available in January next year. Maybe you can find somebody else to entertain u!
let me forward your blog address to your local tourist council. they sure to appoint you as ambassador.
QV: sime things are best kept quiet..but this is not one of them! everyone! this goes to show that all those blog wars u see on the blogosphere can't be all real! take it with a pinch of salt, & pepper!
STP: ur not running away now! i'll be calling u all day, all night, everyday! hehehe
