What Price Is Art?

The City of Melbourne paid around A$150,000.00 for a bunch of sticks below at Federation Square.

This is the work of an artist who wanted to paint the trees blue last year but was stopped by the people of Melbourne for wasting public money. Some people say you can't put a price on art and Melbourne City is going art crazy and wasting money on it. City Councillors...too much money to waste? Our money...

hey wuching...

really lah the melbourne city council taxes melbournians such high anual rates to fund useless 'decorative pieces' that resemble giant bunches of jos sticks?

even the recent refurbishment of Bourke Mall was nothing great...just a few raised platforms for the trams...wtf?

they sure have the 'cheek' to waste ppls hard earned moolah :(

They shouldn't charge such high rates if they nothing much to spend on.

Depends if the art work goes up in value. When Gogh Witlam was prime Minister a lot of people thought he was an idiot for buying Jackson Pollacks, 'Blue Poles' for $1 Million. It's now worth somewhere between $100 Million and $300 Million (and rising).

So, buying art isn't bad if it is a proper work that will increase in value. It also makes the city scape original and interesting (or just down right ugly! lol)

So, will depend on how it looks in a few years ... but, the budget for art and stuff normally doesn't change too much. When the Federal Government gives grants for people to vomit milk (as an art form), you wonder though who is in charge of the art portfolios around the country. ;-)

I won't comment directly on Melbourne City coucils spending though, as I have no idea what they are doing. :-)

dabido: i doubt these bunch of sticks will ever go up in price!

no disrespect but diu...chicken feedlah. singapore nearly spend $450,000 to market and brand "Singapore Zoo" to "the wild". It seems developed countries got money to throw in the name of either brand name or not. Singapore is also spending a fortune to brand the marina bay area as "Marina Bay". Govt also spent $25,000 on an exercise to name our new budget terminal. Now our new budget terminal is called..budget terminal! WTF!!

see fei: they should've just pay $20,000 for u to name it!
