Today during lunch I decided to 'catch snake' and went down to Docklands to check out the Walking Competition that was going on there. I missed out on the marathon on Sunday so I don't intend to miss this one today!
I've missed out on the Women's Final which took place this morning but the Men's Final was just about to start. There were people everywhere eventhough it was a working day and you would think there won't be too many people coming, so wrong!
A few minutes before the race, the athletes came out to the applause of the crowds. There were 3 Australian competitors, 3 English, 1 Indian, 1 Fijian and 1 Malaysian! Malaysia Boleh!
The athletes had only a few minutes to warm up. The Malaysian candidate was Abdullah Mohd Sharrulhaizy who won Gold in the Southeast Asian Games in Manila last year. Let's see what he can do today.
All the athletes were introduced one by one to the crowds. That's Abdullah waving his arms to the crowd when he was introduced, he's number 1693. Wish you all the best mates!
The athletes getting ready...steady...
Go! The race started just before noon and its estimated to finish in 1 1/2 hours walking 20km in 10 laps around the areas here at Docklands. I didn't have time to watch the whole race because I had to get back to work if I don't want to get the sack!
However I did managed to stay for a couple of laps before taking off. I later found out that the Australians took all the medals! Gold went to Nathan Deakes #1033 and Silver went to Luke Adams #1020.
Bronze went to Jared Tallent #1074 seen here walking alongside Parayil Jalan #1502 from India who finished 5th. Not too bad I supposed.
David Kimutai Rotich #1629 came in at number 4 just 2 minutes before Jared Tallent.
All 3 English walkers came in 6th, 7th and 8th places namely Daniel King #1340, Dominic King #1341 who happen to be twin brothers and Andrew Penn #1351 respectively.
The Fijian walker Dip Chand #1416 did not finish the race and Abdullah Mohd Sharrulhaizy #1693 got disqualified for running I think coz you can see from this photo that both his feet are off the ground which is enough for disqualification! Malaysia Boleh!
