Fiesta!

Let's go to another festival in Melbourne today since its been a while since I've posted on festivals and events around Melbourne.

Today we go to Ivanhoe, a suburb northeast of the city where the Ivanhoe Fiesta is being held. This is an annual event though it is my first time here.

The weather wasn't too nice today but that didn't stop people from coming out to enjoy the cold wet Melbourne day on Upper Heidelberg Road here in Ivanhoe.

Check out Robin Hood and one of the King's men. Cool outfits guys! How about some sword-fight? With real blood and brute!

There was a big display of Harley-Davidson motorcycles by the local Harley-Davidson club. Nice shiny bikes. You can pay them to take you for a ride in one of them but that's just not for me.

I'd rather be watching this guy doing his snake stunt here! I think his name is Raymond Hoser and he owns a snake business where he can have a snake show at your party or you can call them to help get rid of that snake that made its home in your garage!

Check out these slithering creatures! Aren't they beautiful? These are non-venomous snakes so they are safe to touch. Do you want to touch them?

Raymond brought with him a lot of snakes for the day and I believe this one he's holding is a black adder? I really can't remember.

He keeps the snakes in these tiny boxes and sometimes he has a few snakes in a very small box.

Gets a bit crowded in that box but I supposed it doesn't really worry the snakes.

This here is a python so I was told but I think its still young so its not too big and everyone can have a chance to hold it, put it around your neck and pat it if you so wish. I touched a snake for the very first time in my life today and I must say it felt just like touching a leather belt!

Here's more non-venomous snakes that the audience are allowed to hold. I think one of them is a copperhead. I didn't get a chance to hold them coz there were too many people around and the children always get ahead of you!

Funny how before today I used to think that snakes are slimy to the touch but they are definitely not. Feels just like leather! But they have powerful skeleton so I can imagine a python strangling your neck when its constricting you!

Other than the snakes they also have these lizards but they don't bite. In fact its good if you find one of these in your backyard coz they eat snails, insects and cockroaches so they are your friends!

They also have some baby crocodiles for you to hold if you choose to. Ugly little creatures aren't they?

I can't remember what snake this is that I was hold with my left hand while I took a photo of it with my right hand holding the camera. Came out quite good and the snake was very cooperative! Let's all go get ourselves a snake for pet!

Siao Ding Dang

I remember when I was growing up in Malaysia there was a comic which I enjoyed reading everytime a new issue hit the store. It was Siao Ding Dang!

There was Siao Ding Dang himself, Ta Siong and I can't remember the rest of the gang that includes Ta Siong's future wife and the 2 bullies, a fat one and a tiny one.

Originally the comic was written and animated in japanese for the japanese market but its popularity spread across most of Asia and most people get to read it in chinese so names had to be changed so the characters would have chinese names instead. Siao Ding Dang was supposed to be Doraemon in Japan.

If you're not familiar with Siao Ding Dang, he's actually a robot cat sent from the future to guide Ta Siong through his life so he doesn't end up in some horrible fate which I can't remember. You might wonder why Siao Ding Dang doesn't look like a cat especially since he doesn't have his cat's ears and that's because they got eaten by rats when he was sleeping one day! From then on he was scare of rats for the rest of his life!

One really cool thing about the robotic cat from the future is his pouch on the front of his torso. From this pouch he can take out any kinds of cool gadget you can possibly think of! Its like a bottomless pouch with unlimited supply of cool gadgets. Now how do so many things fit in his tiny pouch? Well its like a worm-hole to another dimension where things can come out of it as well as go back into it. High quantum physics stuff I won't even bother to find an explanation for!

Anyway I used to wait eagerly for the next issue of Siao Ding Dang to hit the store periodically and would spent days going through the whole book several times not just for the cool pictures but also because it was in chinese and my chinese was terrible I had trouble understanding some of the dialogues.

I love reading Siao Ding Dang and I used to wish that I had my own personal robotic cat from the future...

...so I improvise and make 3 of my own!

I'm Beginning To Like Soccer

I'm sure most of you soccer mania people out there would know that the FIFA World Cup in Germany is less than a month away so get ready for sleepless nights but sleepy eyes at work the following days.

Some of you would've known by now that I am not a fan of any sports according to this post I did a while back. However having said that, I am sure that I can be swayed to appreciate the games if the soccer players were like the one in this soccer match below. Mmm, I'm beginning to like soccer...

Almost Perfect

My brother sent me this a while back and I thought he got it from his son! Anyway wherever he got it I think it was an almost perfect score...too bad, so sad. Next time maybe.

Well that is still a word so I think the teacher should at least award half a point for that, what do you think?

I've been doing a lot of CnP postings lately due to lack of happenings going on in my life. I'd prefer to post on things that happen in my life on a daily basis but there isn't much happening so until things start to happen...I have to make happening things. Confused? Don't worry, so am I!

Would you believe it...

Would you believe it if I told you...

...that I used to read these books and that's how I learnt the basics of computers?

...that I got conned into buying these stupid books many years ago because of my fascination for the cosmos?

...that I used to play these games? I'm not embarrassed to say that Mechwarrior kicks ass!

Phone Sex

I listen to Hamish & Andy on the radio in my car on the way home everyday. These 2 fellows are a couple of funny bones and they like to play pranks on just about anybody. Last week they decided to play a prank on a couple of phone sex workers. What they did was ring up one, put her on hold, ring another one and then get the 2 phone sex workers to talk to each other not realising that they were actually talking to each other!

You can download their podcast here or you can just listen to the prank here. I've written down the diaogue of the conversation below.

Girl 1: Hello
Girl 2: Hi! How are you?
Girl 1: Good...how are you?
Girl 2: I'm very good.
Girl 1: What are you doing?
Girl 2: Me? Just lying back, relaxing. What are you doing?
Girl 1: Lying back relaxing...where are you?
Girl 2: Just on my bed, what are you doing to yourself right now?
Girl 1: Oh...nothing, how old are you?
Girl 2: Me? 40 and yourself?
Girl 1: 28 honey...ya...
Girl 2: Yeah? Oo..I like a younger woman...
Girl 1: Do you?
Girl 2: Uh..huh..
Girl 1: What are you wearing?
Girl 2: Me? Just a little singlet & pant, what about yourself?
Girl 1: Mm...I'm wearing a black mini-skirt, G-string, a black bra & a red top.
Girl 2: Oo..sounds nice..
Girl 1: Umm..thanks.
Girl 2: What'd you be doing if I were there right now?

*PAUSE* At this time there was a pause, I think Girl #1 was thinking something's not quite right but she continues...

Girl 1: Anything you want..
Girl 2: Yeah? What would you want me to be doing to you?
Girl 1: Anything honey, yeah?
Girl 2: Yeah...
Girl 1: Weren't you at work baby?
Girl 2: Pardon?
Girl 1: Didn't you say you're at work?
Girl 2: Am I at work?
Girl 1: Yeah.
Girl 2: No, I'm just home.
Girl 1: You told me the whole time you're at work baby?

*PAUSE* Another pause coz Girl #1 is even more suspicious now & Girl #2 is feeling it too!

Girl 2: Pardon?
Girl 1: Just told me the whole time you're at work baby?

*PAUSE* 3rd pause coz they're both feeling uneasy now.

Girl 2: No, I'm at home.
Girl 1: Did you ring me or I ring you?
Girl 2: You ring me.
Girl 1: No, you ring me honey.

*PAUSE* It suddenly hit!

Girl 2: You sure about that?
Girl 1: I'm positive OK?
Girl 2: Yeah? OK, where are you? At home?
Girl 1: Yeah, have a good day. Bye.

They were both reading from the same scripts!

Name's Bond, James Bond.

OK I don't have a life so here I am blogging. Here's a joke for you, hope you like it and maybe the guys can use it too. I got it from the newspaper coz I think its worth posting.

James Bond walks into a bar and takes a seat next to a very attractive woman. He gives her a quick glance, then casually looks at his watch for a moment.

The woman notices this and asks: "Is your date running late?" "No," Bond replies. "Q has just given me this state-of-the-art watch. I was testing it." The intrigued woman says: "A state-of-the-art watch? What's so special about it?"

Bond explains: "It uses alpha waves to talk to me telephatically." The lady says: "What's it telling you now?" "Well, to be perfectly frank," says Bond. "It says you're not wearing any knickers!"

The woman giggles and replies: "Well, it must be broken because I assure you I am." Bond looks momentarily puzzled. Then he taps his watch, grins and says: "Wouldn't you know it! Bloody thing's an hour fast."

Its A Dog's Life

On Sunday at the Dutch Festival I actually left a bit early to go to another event that was happening in Kew. Its the Guide Dogs Victoria's annual Open Day and its open to anyone who might want to know about guide dogs or even anything to do with dogs.

As with every year the event was a sell-out and there were cars everywhere trying to get a park closer to the entrance. No chance but there were plenty of car parking at neighbouring premises and free shuttle buses to bring you to the centre and back again. I opted for that option.

Guide Dogs Victoria's objective is to raise awareness of what it takes to train a guide dog for a vision impaired person and to raise money to keep the program going. Much is need to train these dogs and they rely heavily on donations and charities.

The puppies were bred here at the centre and adopted out to good families before they return for their full trainings. Labrador puppies are best suited for guide dogs like this sooooo cute little doggiee..!

This is a mature greyhound that was also part of the day's event to promote some kind of greyhound adoption program or something I don't quite understand coz I wasn't paying attention, too busy trying to capture a good shot of the dog..lucky the handler helped by distracting it.

Here's another labrador puppy who will start its socialisation program in the loving home of a volunteer family when its 7 weeks old. During the year it will learn basic obedience and be gradually introduced to a range of sights and sounds to fit it for its future role.

They had a Guide Dog Training Demonstration where they show how the pups were taught to learn the things in their surroundings and how to deal with such obstructions like ignoring a kid's toy by the side of the road and not to leave mess everywhere in the general public.

They are also trained to solve a multitude of problems they might encounter out in the community like how not to get distracted by people paying attention on them and even how to lead the owner away from potential dangers.

This is a short hair Retriever I think, bit like Che-cheh's Chester! Here it demonstrates its ability to manoeuver around obstacles. Wish some of the kids I see at the shopping centres would be as well behaved and clever like this dog here!

Let's give a big round of applauds to the trainers and the guide dogs! After the intensive trainings at the centre these wonderful guide dogs will graduate and be matched with a blind or vision impaired person to form a loving team that will last up to 10 years.

Next we have the dog obedience demonstration by the Croydon Dog Obedience School. The demonstration is done by its members and their dogs. The school actually trains both the owner and the dog so as to create a closer bond between the two.

All these dogs are trained to behave and not go off sniffing other dog's behind like what dogs usually do when they meet! They aren't allow to do anything unless told by the owners to do so but during the demonstration a lot of tricks didn't go according to plans! LOL! But they were mainly a well behaved bunch. And the dogs too! Hehe..

They had this trick where they get the big dogs to line up in a row and get the little Jack Russell to run underneath them like going through a tunnel. Good dogs! And if we can get the owners to do the same...

3 cheers for the doggies! I used to have dogs for pets when I was little but we never had so much trouble like nowadays where you are supposed to send them to training school and spend heaps of money taking care of their health, etc, etc...I think I'll just stick to goldfish.

I Need A Haircut

I've always had my hair short for God knows how many years now. Too damn troublesome if I had to comb it! I remember during the 80's at one stage when it was fashionable to grow your hair long and blow wave it and finished it off with half a can of hair spray so that we could all have hairs like Duran Duran or Aha! LOL! What were we thinking! Anyway these days I have my hair really short so its less hassle to keep, just slap on some gel and run my fingers through them and its done!

Look at this ugly face with that disgustingly long hair! Yes, this is too long for me already and its due for another cut. After applying gel to my scalp I was shock to see how long and untidy my hair is.

I feel like this guy here from DragonBallz! Well, not that long and blond but you know what I mean.

Anyway, I find that the hair on the side of my head seem to grow faster than the top part. You should see me when I don't have gel in my head, its really boofy on the sides! But with gel I was able to shape it anyway I want and I was doing a bit of experiment with my hair where I flatten the top down and let the sides stand out like 2 horns sticking out of my head. It was shocking but at the same time realising that its not so bad after all!

I could be the next Wolverine of X-men! Move over Hugh Jackman, its time I show you how to be Wolverine! X-men 3: The Last Stand opens in theatres across the globe on the 26th of May and I can't wait!

Going Dutch

Sunday the 30th of April was Dutch Orange Day aka Koninginnedag or Queen's Birthday, the birthday of Queen Juliana in the Netherlands.
Why orange? Because the Dutch wear orange on this day to celebrate the Dutch Royal Family also known as the House of Orange-Nassau. Don't worry about that tiger with its ass sticking up in the air, its just a slide for the kids.

So what comes to your mind when you think of Dutch? Most people would say tulips where in the Netherlands are grown so famously for. But we do have a Dutch family who's been here in Melbourne for many years and they grow most of the tulips and other flowers as well. They are the Tesselaars and they had a stall there that day but business was a bit slow because of the rain.

Sjoelen is a popular board game in Holland that came about in the 19th century. Not sure how the game is played but the game has always been big in Holland and Belgium and has also spread to Germany.

One other thing that associates with the Dutch is clogs and clog making. Though not specifically localised to Holland the Dutch do wear these traditional footwears during the festive seasons. We had the privilege of watching the clog maker demonstrating his trade.

And that day I saw a lot of people wearing clogs in different colours and designs. They're wooden shoes but surprisingly very light too because of the wood they use. Today they are going to attempt a World Record Clog Dancing here at Federation Square!

We had the usual official opening ceremony by a few VIPs including the Lord Mayor of Melbourne Cr. John So giving a few words to declare the festival open. Then there's some formalities before the Clog Dancing begins.

Everybody and anybody can join in the dance even if you don't know how to dance coz they'll teach you! All you need is a pair of clogs which I don't have so I'm out. Even the State Emergency Services volunteers who happened to be nearby join in the fun as well.

The dance looks quite simple enough, you just have to time yourself and just do what the person next to you is doing! Despite the light rain everyone did their best for the world record which is sanctioned by the people from the Guinness Book of Records!

That lady in the middle on stage led the dance and everyone was supposed to follow her lead. She tells you when to move to the right, when to move to the left and when to stomp your clogs! Easy! Even Cr. John So was in it too seen here with the arrow pointing at him.

When it was over everybody cheered. I'm not sure if they've broken any record that day, there were 163 dancers and no one got disqualified and the whole thing was live webcast with another dance group in the Netherlands on the internet.

You can watch a short clip of the dance below;
