An artificial beach was created on the lawn of Alexandra Gardens to hold the Moomba Waterfest Beach Volleyball Tournament for 3 days over the weekend. Don't know why but I found myself drawn to the tournament.
I don't know how the game is played, nor do I know that these ladies were playing for the finals that day but I just couldn't pull myself away from the match...
Funny how I saw a lot of people taking photographs of the players too, not just me. They must be big fans of the players, I'm not into beach volleyball normally but today, I don't know what got into me...I may become a fan also.
Hmm...good games ladies. I think I'm getting the hang of it now, from now on women beach volleyball is my spectator sport! Nice bods, oops...I mean ball.
I've always thought they were part of Sunidhi's entourage visiting Melbourne at the time but little did I know they were actually Melbourne's own Bollywood Dancers!
In addition to performing for any kind of public or private functions, they also teach Bollywood lessons for anyone who wish to be able to dance like them and like in those Bollywood movies!
I like Bollywood Dances a lot, they are full of vibrant and lots of energy in their moves. I remember when I was little and my grandmother used to take us to see those old Hindi movies so long ago. It would always be full house and everybody loved them even though we didn't know what they were talking or singing about!
But time has changed and the music gets even better and louder with contemporary influences. The dances are modern but are influenced by Bhangra (traditional Punjabi) and other classical Indian dances making them part of the Bollywood craze currently taking the world by storm.
Do visit their website here for details of their upcoming events and classes if you are interested in taking some lessons yourself. Today here at Moomba they were having a free workshop for everyone teaching simple moves so we can all join in their dances later!
The moves are simple enough, from what they showed us. Well, it looks easy enough until you do it. Just imagine changing light globes and swapping flies with your hands and galloping like a horse!
After the lessons they encouraged everyone to join in their dance but very sorry if you think you're going to see me dance today! I always have a good excuse for not participating because who else is going to take the pictures right?
So enough of my gas bagging, my pictures don't do them justice. To truly experience the energy of these dancers you have got to watch them strut their stuff, enjoy the video below.
The parade was ending when I got there and I only got to see the end bits. You can read my last year's post on the parade here, sorry I couldn't bring you the whole parade this year.
But I did get to see a little bit at the end like these flamenco and spanish dancers and some other groups but right at the end was the Chinese Lion Dance troupes with Dai Loong, the biggest dragon in Australia!
Dai Loong is so big that it requires 200 people to participate in many facets of the parade. To stage a procession, there are two lion dance troupes; a musical percussion group; carriers of traditional weapons, mythical creatures, traditional banners, flower baskets – all who have particular significance – and of course, around 100 dragon legs.

It's the Moomba Festival weekend here in Melbourne and there's lots of happenings in town along the Yarra River and Docklands all weekend. Moomba is an annual festival in Melbourne where it's just a great excuse to have lots of fun!
There's plenty of activities to see and do at Moomba but the one event I love to see is the Birdman Rally on the Yarra! The rally involves contestants to strap on their self constructed flying crafts and battle it out to see who can 'fly' the furthest.
There's no rules to what craft you want to build, this guy built himself a green dragon. Dragons are known to fly so the stories go...
...but this one ends up in the water like every other contestants! The idea is to have fun and just enjoying the attention you get from the audience with their cheers and jeers!
Then the judges will decide on what points to award the contestant, this one scores a 4.5 which is not too bad. Mayor John So is one of the judges in today's rally.
Some people are really enthusiastic about winning, they'll build a really aerodynamic craft hoping to 'go' the distance and win the first prize which is a holiday package for 2 to Hawaii!
Some believe they are superheroes that can fly without any aid of a flying craft. All they need is their flying capes but they all end up wet.
This guy must've stole his idea from Leonardo DaVinci's flying craft coz the similarity is uncanny. Too bad it didn't make the distance but he scored a 4.5 also!
Then we had Count Dracula himself showing us how it's done since he's very good with flying as a bat at night but unfortunately not during the day and ended up yes, you guessed it, in the water. He scored just a 3.
This guy looks like he has a mattress strap to his back or is that a light weigh aerodynamic wing? Unfortunately not aerodynamic enough and he scored a 3 also. Better luck next year.
The last contestant is also last year's winner and this year it looks like he's made much improvement on his craft, it looks like a glider which means he's bound to 'hover' for a split second longer than the other contestants.
And he made it! Nice landing too, he has gone the farthest than any other contestants with a smooth landing on the water with minimum water splash.
He scored 6.5 and gets to retain his championship for the Flying Birdman of the year 2 years in a row! Now he'll be jetting off to Hawaii soon.
Eww! What the hell is it?! Looks like some kind of hairy caterpillar or grub crawling in dirt!
Worse still it's edible! Of course it's none organic coz it's some sort of sweet made with peanuts. Tastes delicious like 'kern therng'. I don't know what it's called but if you do please leave me a comment and let me know ya!
This will be my last post on my Visit Malaysia/Singapore Year 2007. Sorry you had to put up for so long reading boring posts on my trip, I promise you won't get anymore post on my trip again but more on local events here in Melbourne from now on. Have a great week ahead!

Just look at the length of the blades, spanning across the entire ceiling making it easily the world's biggest ceiling fan. Now tell me you haven't seen one bigger and yes, it does work because it's breezy and cool standing underneath it but I wouldn't like to be underneath too long in case it drops down!

Are you Che Che[h]? No I'm not but I do know who she is, she lives in KL and she's my blogger friend even though we've never met.
In love with Che Che[h]? You betcha! But I was heart broken when she stood me up that night...hehehe, I enjoy rubbing it in!
Che Che[h] didn't tell me she owns an international chain of retail shops based in New York and now she has a branch in Singapore as well.
Che Che[h] owns a handbag shop! She sells nothing but handbags!

But I saw this Ahpek very resourceful making a hat out of a cardboard packaging! Got plastic summore to keep the cardboard from getting soaked in the rain. All you have to do is cut a hole in the middle so it fits your head snugly.
So we can all learn a thing or two from this old timer, don't waste money on expensive stuffs. Be resourceful and use what's around you and you're sure to come up with something!
